EARLY BEGINNINGS
Kobus Muller was adopted by his parents, Jacobus and Dirkie Muller. Two years later, his brother was born on Kobus's birthday, making him the oldest of the two siblings. He grew up in Vischkuil, just outside Springs, Gauteng, South Africa, where his childhood was filled with music and a deep passion for animals. From a young age, Kobus developed a natural ability to play several instruments by ear, effortlessly picking up melodies and harmonies without relying on written sheet music. This talent sparked an early interest in songwriting and composition, leading him to write and compose his first song, "Het Jy My Lief" ("Do you love me?") by the age of 9. His musical prowess not only fueled his songwriting but also enhanced his singing skills, which he developed without formal training.
Living outside city life, Kobus also developed a love for helping animals, earning him the nickname "Mr. Doolittle" at school. His teachers and fellow pupils often brought him injured or orphaned animals and baby birds that had fallen from trees, which he would nurse back to health. He cared for and owned a variety of farm animals, exotic pets, reptiles, and even spiders.
While attending kindergarten at CR Swart in Vischkuil, Kobus was unexpectedly chosen to perform a special farewell song for the principal, Jantjie. At just 5 years old, he sang "Jantjie", a popular Afrikaans song by Anton Goosen and performed by Sonja Herholdt, with its poignant lyrics "Jantjie, kom huis toe" ("Jantjie, come home"). The performance deeply resonated with the audience, capturing their sentiment of not wanting the beloved principal to leave. This experience was pivotal for Kobus; seeing the audience moved to tears, he realized the profound power of music to connect with people and was inspired to pursue a career in singing.
Kobus attended Volkskool Brakpan from the second year of primary school (Grade 2) and matriculated there in 2003. This private school, part of the Beweging vir Christelik-Volkseie Onderwys (BCVO), commonly known as CVO, became a platform for his cultural pursuits. His favorite subjects were Biology and Technical Drawing, and he also studied Zulu. Throughout his high school years, he showcased his vocal talent as the lead singer in multiple school revues, highlighting his passion for musical performances. Kobus was recognized as "BCVO Kultuurseun van die Jaar" (Culture Boy of the Year) for three consecutive years: 2001, 2002, and 2003, for excelling in cultural activities like music, drama, and art.
Kobus with his parents, Jacobus (Koos) and Dirkie Muller, at the Huisgenoot Tempo Awards in 2011.Following his early musical experiences, Kobus won several talent competitions, which helped him gain confidence and recognition. His parents' support was invaluable; they drove him to countless events and did their best to support him in every way they could.
He began performing at various functions and promotions to earn money, diligently saving his earnings alongside his pocket money. This financial discipline allowed him to purchase his first musical instruments and eventually invest in recording equipment, setting up a makeshift studio in his childhood bedroom. Earlier in his career, Kobus Muller performed under the stage name Jay-T but later adopted the name Kobus Muller just before releasing his first album. With guidance and support from Vic van der Watt, a respected sound engineer and producer in Springs who is remembered for his influence on local music, Kobus learned to use recording software. This mentorship, combined with his own determination and resourcefulness, enabled him to record, produce, and release his first 13-track album, Glasie Wyn, in 2006.
The album included five songs solely written and composed by Kobus: "Glasie Wyn", "Jammer", "Maak Dit Nie Seer", "Vir My", and "Rondom Jou". This achievement marked a significant milestone in Kobus's early career, laying the foundation for his future endeavors as a singer, songwriter, musician, and music producer. He also recorded and released his first music video for the song "Glasie Wyn", which premiered in 2006, showcasing his talent to a wider audience. "Maak Dit Nie Seer" ("Doesn’t it hurt") was a deeply personal song that Kobus wrote to explore the emotions and unanswered questions he had about his biological parents. The song reflected his inner journey as a young boy, coming to terms with his understanding of his adoption and the complex feelings it stirred within him. It wasn’t until 2011, during the CD launch of his album Alles en Meer, which coincidentally took place on his birthday, that Kobus publicly revealed the song was about his feelings toward his biological parents and his adoption. It was also the first time he shared with the public that he was adopted, highlighting the profound love and support his adoptive parents had always shown him. Sadly, in 2021, Kobus's father passed away due to complications with COVID-19, a loss that deeply affected him and his family.

He won the competition on July 1, with the event organized in collaboration between Radio Laeveld, a local radio station known for promoting regional music and cultural events, and Super CD, a prominent South African music store chain at the time. This victory also served as his Supersterre audition, as part of the prize was an entry into the top 150 of the semi-finals of Supersterre.
In addition to his musical talents, Kobus is multilingual. He speaks Afrikaans and English fluently and has a good command of German, having conducted several radio and TV interviews and recorded several songs in the language. Kobus is actively working on further improving his German skills. Additionally, he speaks several other languages, which has helped him connect with diverse audiences and expand his musical reach.
