Christmas is a season that fills the heart with love, warmth, and joy. The lights on the trees, the soft glow of candles, the quiet sound of songs we sing together, and the feeling of togetherness create something truly magical. Growing up in South Africa, my Christmases were bright and sunny, filled with laughter, family, and the unforgettable smells of my mother’s home baked Christmas treats. Those memories are deeply rooted in love, faith, and being together as a family.
The first time I saw snow falling softly through the streetlights was back in 2013 during my first visit to Hamburg, Germany, and I was completely mesmerized. I felt like a child again, catching flakes on my tongue, watching them melt, and laughing at my clumsy attempts to build snowmen. I am still terrible at building them. I remember the Disney movie Frozen had a song called Do You Want to Build a Snowman, but nobody ever said how tricky it really is - no wonder Elsa never wanted to build one! Even my most recent attempts still look like something out of a horror movie, so I’ve decided to stick to making music instead.
Making snow angels was even more fun, though it came with its own surprise. Nobody warned me that snow has a sneaky way of soaking your clothes and leaving you shivering from head to toe. I was freezing, laughing at myself, and trying to enjoy every moment at the same time. I had no other jacket and had to ask the producer I was working with for a dry one. He laughed so much at my snowy chaos that I couldn’t help but laugh along. But even in that cold, wet madness, I could not get enough. Snow transforms ordinary streets into a winter wonderland, making every corner sparkle with possibility and reminding me of the childlike joy, innocence, and quiet magic that Christmas brings.
I have always dreamt of a white Christmas, just like the ones in Hollywood movies. Snow falling gently outside, a warm house with a glowing fireplace, the smell of baking, a cup of eggnog in one hand and warm Glühwein in the other, smoke curling from the chimney while it is freezing outside in the forest, and surrounded by family and friends - this is my perfect picture of Christmas. Singing Christmas carols around the piano, laughing, sharing stories, and soaking in the magical atmosphere is how I have always imagined the season.
Although I have not yet experienced such a Christmas in Berlin, I hope to share it one day with my mother, family, and friends from South Africa here in Germany. What a magical moment that would be, celebrating together in a winter wonderland. One can only dream, because I live abroad, and you can never really plan or rely on the weather forecast in Berlin. It changes its mind more often than die, der, and das in German.
For those who are not familiar with German, these little words are like the English word “the,” but there are three different versions depending on the gender of the noun. Even native speakers mix them up all the time. You might say one thing with der and then immediately realize it should have been die or das. It is everywhere in sentences, and it can make speaking German feel like a fun little puzzle. I can imagine both Germans and those learning the language shaking their heads and laughing, because it is exactly this mix of confusion and surprises that gives German its quirky charm.
It was in 2024 that I first heard Heilige Nacht with its
new German lyrics written by
Helene Fischer,
and I was immediately captivated. The words, the emotion behind them, and the way Helene delivered the song spoke to me in a way I could not ignore. As a longtime fan of the original classic O Holy Night, I felt a deep connection to this German version and knew I had to record and produce it myself to express the emotions it awakened in me. O Holy Night really reminds me of the Christmas season spirit so much that I also recorded an Afrikaans version called Dis Kersfees. Both songs are on my Christmas album Klang Der Weihnacht, including a special two-in-one mix called Dis Kersfees / Heilige Nacht . As a native Afrikaans speaker, it has been such a joy to finally understand German. There is a depth and feeling in the language that simply cannot be captured in translation. Listening to and singing Heilige Nacht in German allowed me to experience the song in a way that a translation could never convey, giving every phrase a depth, warmth, and emotion that I hope truly touches the heart.
It is this sense of hope, love, and family connection that inspired me to bring my own voice to Heilige Nacht. Every time I sing it, I am reminded of my father, my grandparents, and all those loved ones who have passed on, yet remain present through the Christmas memories we shared, as well as my mother, family, and friends in South Africa, whom I carry in my heart when I cannot be with them during this busy season as an artist in Germany. Their absence has taught me how precious every moment is with the people who are still here. These memories, together with the hope of future Christmases spent surrounded by family and friends, are what make this season feel truly special and unforgettable.
O HOLY NIGHT AND THE ORIGINAL COMPOSER
Heilige Nacht is the German version of the timeless Christmas classic O Holy Night originally composed in 1847 by Adolphe Adam a French composer celebrated for his beautiful melodies and sacred music. O Holy Night has been sung and cherished for over one hundred seventy years telling the story of hope redemption and the birth of Jesus Christ.
The song speaks of light shining in darkness and of God’s love reaching the world through the birth of His Son. The lyrics remind us that even in times of sorrow or difficulty there is hope and joy. I was drawn to this song for its spiritual message of hope love and faith.

For me Christmas has always been about family and love. I remember my mother in the kitchen baking cookies and preparing traditional treats. The aromas of cinnamon gingerbread and vanilla filled the house and created memories that last a lifetime. Those simple acts of love showed me the importance of cherishing moments and caring for those around us.
Losing my father made Christmas a bittersweet time. His absence is deeply felt but the memories of past holidays decorating the tree together singing carols and sharing meals continue to warm my heart. Living in Berlin has added distance from family and traditions but it has also made me appreciate the joy warmth and togetherness that Christmas brings even more.
MY MUSIC AND CHRISTMAS JOURNEY
After recording Heilige Nacht I continued exploring themes of gratitude love and faith in my music. Songs such as Amazing Grace To the Ones Who Chose Me and Die Onse Vader reflect my heritage personal experiences and the universal values of hope and family. These releases came after Heilige Nacht and continue my journey of storytelling through music that connects across generations.

EXPERIENCING CHRISTMAS IN BERLIN AND THE SNOW
Berlin in December is breathtaking. The streets are lined with twinkling lights Christmas markets fill the air with music and laughter and snow covers rooftops and parks in a soft white blanket. Walking through the city I feel the quiet magic of the season.
I love the feeling of snow crunching under my feet the smell of hot chocolate in the market stalls and the way the world feels softer calmer and more beautiful. I still remember the childlike wonder of trying to make snowmen never perfect always funny but full of joy. Snow allows me to feel hope peace and the excitement of Christmas as if I were a child again. These moments inspired the recording of Heilige Nacht a song that celebrates faith love family and the joy of Christmas.
PERFORMING IN FRANKFURT AND CHRISTMAS MARKETS
This Christmas I had the joy of performing at the Inoventiq Lounge Christmas Special at Zum Schwarzen Stern in Frankfurt am Main. The venue overlooks the Frankfurt Römer Weihnachtsmarkt, one of the most famous Christmas markets in Germany. Singing Heilige Nacht while watching the lights of the market and the joyful crowds below was unforgettable. Experiences like this capture the true spirit of Christmas, blending music faith and the magic of the season.

SPREADING JOY THROUGH CHRISTMAS CHARITABLE WORK
Kobus Muller spreading Christmas joy by delivering food parcels to those in need.One of my most memorable Christmas experiences was helping children at orphanages in South Africa, as well as participating in other charitable work. I walked through East Rand Shopping Mall, selling empty boxes, which were later filled with presents purchased from the money raised. Before Christmas, a “Christmas Father” helped deliver these boxes, stacked in the shape of a Christmas tree, to the children of the Second Life Orphanage. On that day, I also performed Christmas songs to help raise funds for the orphanage. What touched me most was that many of the children did not ask for toys, but for basic personal items like toiletries and clothing, even at a very young age. These moments opened my eyes to the importance of love, care, and family, and reminded me that we often take the small things in life for granted.
These moments reflect the true spirit of Christmas - giving, love, and caring for those in need. I am currently looking for new charitable opportunities in Germany to continue spreading joy during the holiday season.
