Kobus Muller to Perform National Anthem, Debut Global Release of “Shosholoza” in Berlin
Berlin, 15 August 2025 – South African-born, Berlin-based artist Kobus Muller has been officially invited by the South African Embassy in Berlin to represent South Africa, together with other South African artists based in Germany, at the Open Day of the German Federal Government 2025, taking place on 23–24 August. Muller will perform, amongst others, and leading the South African National Anthem on the main stage in the Protokollhof at the German Federal Foreign Office on Saturday, 23 August at 10:35 AM. In addition, Muller will perform the powerful heritage song “Shosholoza” including an Afrikaans/Schlager song, and is also scheduled to perform again on the main stage later in the afternoon.
“As a proud South African living in Berlin, it is a deep honour to represent my country and our culture at such a prestigious international event,” said Kobus Muller. “I believe Nelson Mandela would be proud to see how music continues to unite us across borders and backgrounds. Through this performance, I want to share the soul of South Africa and what it means to stand for unity in diversity. I strive to be a South African Cultural Ambassador here in Europe and abroad”
This invitation follows Muller’s acclaimed impromptu a cappella performance of the South African National Anthem during a visit to the South African Embassy in Berlin on International Mandela Day, 18 July 2025. The Embassy posted a video of the performance to their official social media with the caption:
“Today, we honor the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela - a symbol of peace, justice, and the power of reconciliation. His unwavering vision continues to inspire generations around the globe. Adding to the spirit, renowned and multi-award-winning South African singer Kobus Muller, known for his powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics, brings a musical tribute that echoes the strength and resilience Mandela stood for.”
The performance resonated deeply with audiences and was widely shared, prompting the Embassy to invite Muller to perform again at the high-profile German Federal Government Open Day. There, he and other South African artists will join a distinguished line-up of cultural representatives from around the world. These performances highlight the growing role of music in global diplomacy, intercultural dialogue, and the celebration of unity through diversity on one of Europe’s most visible political stages.
Held annually, the Federal Government’s Open Day gives the public rare access to the Federal Chancellery, federal ministries, and the Federal Press and Information Office. On 23–24 August 2025, representatives of the German federal government and diplomatic delegations will welcome over 100,000 visitors for live discussions, cultural showcases, and behind-the-scenes insights into daily political life.
In celebration of this historic appearance, Nextereo Records will officially launch the pre-release campagne of the latest studio recording of Kobus Muller's “Shosholoza”. The official release date is scheduled across all global digital streaming platforms on 12 September 2025, including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Deezer, and more.
“Shosholoza’ is a song of progress, perseverance, and togetherness,” Muller explains. “It’s a song that South Africans carry in our hearts, and I want the world to feel that spirit of movement - of pushing forward together”
Born and raised in Springs, South Africa, Kobus rose to national fame after winning South Africa’s SABC 2 TV singing competition Supersterre in 2007. Since then, he has released over 16 albums in multiple languages - including Afrikaans, English, German, Zulu and Xhosa, Sesotho, his music has taken him to over 30 countries and across 6 continents. Muller’s cross-cultural artistry has long served as a bridge between continents. His music celebrates the rich mosaic of human identity and serves as a call for empathy, inclusion, and shared humanity. As a career highlight, Muller also performed the South African National Anthem at the annual AFASA (African Farmers Association of South Africa) event for President Jacob Zuma in 2012.
“Music is a universal language,” says Muller. “It allows us to tell our stories, honour our heritage, and move forward as one. Through this performance and global release, I want to show that diversity is our strength - and that South Africa’s voice belongs on every global stage.”
This message aligns closely with the values championed by platforms such as Spotify, Meta, TikTok, and YouTube, which have increasingly spotlighted creators who promote inclusion, cultural identity, and social impact through music.
Beyond music, Kobus Muller has remained actively involved in philanthropic work throughout his career - supporting causes such as children’s health, animal rescue, and cancer research. His Mandela Day tribute and upcoming Open Day performance stand as part of his commitment to carrying forward Mandela’s legacy of justice, compassion, and unity.
“Performing in honour of Mandela’s legacy reminds me why I started this journey,” he adds. “To inspire, to unite, and to serve something bigger than myself. I am deeply grateful to the South African Embassy in Berlin for this incredible opportunity, and for the unwavering support they continue to show for South African culture abroad. Their commitment to promoting our nation’s heritage, values, and artistic voices on the global stage is both inspiring and invaluable. It’s a privilege to contribute to the efforts of the South African Embassy here in Berlin, so dedicated to honouring the spirit of South Africa and keeping our cultural identity alive in the hearts of South Africans overseas. Their trust means the world to me, and I hope to make them - and our country - proud.”
